Naruto Episode 1 Summary

Naruto Episode 1 opens with a scene from the past when the village of Konoha was attacked by a giant creature of immense power called the Kyuubi, or the Nine Tailed Fox. The village could not stand against it, and it faced total destruction. The Fourth Hokage, the leader of the village, used a drastic technique that imprisoned and sealed the creature's power inside a newborn child. This child is named Naruto.

In the present, Naruto is a young boy struggling to fit into his world. His parents were killed by the Nine-Tails and he grew up as an orphan. Many of the villagers still remember that the creature inside him killed so many of their loved ones and they all shun him for it. He reacts to their animosity by acting out. He vandalizes the monuments of the past leaders of the village just to get attention.

Naruto is finally captured by the village guards and sent back to the Ninja Academy where he is training to become a ninja. Naruto is reprimanded for repeatedly failing his classes. He does so badly that Iruka, his teacher, tells everyone they have to do the transformation technique. They all have to change their appearance to copy the teacher. Naruto transforms into a scantly clad girl instead and makes Iruka furious.

After class, Iruka takes him out to clean up the mess he made of the monuments. He, feels compassion for Naruto and treats him to some Ramen. Ramen is his favorite food in the world, and he is completely obsessed with it. This single act of kindness sparks a small change in Naruto, and he decides to try harder to become a ninja.

In class the next day it is time for the final exam at the ninja academy. Naruto has repeatedly failed to pass the previous exams and is determined to do it this time. To pass, he has to do the Replication Technique and make a copy of himself. He makes a thoroughly messed up dummy that sits on the floor looking dumb, and Iruka fails him once again. Mizuki is a friend of Iruka and is the other proctor of the exam. He sticks up for Naruto and asks that he be allowed to pass, but the failure is final.

After the exam, Naruto sits by himself as a lonely failure while he watches the other kids doted on by their families. Suddenly Mizuki appears. He tells him of a forbidden scroll called the scroll of sealing, which will let him learn a powerful technique and allow him to graduate. He carries it outside the village where he is supposed to meet Mizuki. While he waits, he opens the scroll and practices as hard as he can on the first technique he finds: the Shadow Replication Technique.

Meanwhile the whole village is in an uproar, trying desperately to find the precious scroll before it falls into enemy hands. As Mizuki runs to the meeting place, he reveals that he plans kill Naruto and take the scroll for himself. He was just using him to get it out of the village. Iruka finds Naruto and confronts him.

Moments later, Iruka pushes Naruto out of the way as a rain of knives hit him. Mizuki appears and demands Naruto hand over the scroll. He tries to turn turn him against Iruka and claims his teacher hates him. Mizuki tells Naruto how he is the reason so many villagers died and reveals the story of the Kyuubi sealed inside him.

Mizuki throws a huge shiruken at Naruto, but Iruka jumps in front of it and protects him. He reveals that he knows how Naruto feels being an orphan because he grew up the same way. In fact it was the Kyuubi that killed them.

Naruto runs off as fast as he can with Mizuki and Iruka in hot pursuit. Mizuki transforms and disguises himself as Iruka to try to get him to hand over the scroll. Iruka had himself transformed to look like Naruto and attacks Mizuki instead.

Mizuki is about to kill Iruka when Naruto jumps out from behind a tree and knocks him down. He then uses the Shadow Replication Technique that he had just learned. Suddenly there are hundreds of copies of himself surrounding Mizuki. The army of replications then beat him to a pulp.

Iruka gives Naruto his own forehead protector as recognition that he has passed the academy and become a true ninja. For the first time in his life, Naruto is recognized and approved of. He has finally found a friend and his days as an outcast are over. This marks the beginning of Naruto's journey from being a bratty outcast to becoming a great hero.
